Carreer nex steps
I've been thinking about my career and next steps on it. But first, some background.
I started studying at university to be an IT professional. Had classes about networking, operating systems, linux and so on.
Worked about a year with a banking company, worst decision ever!
Changed to a services provider, where companies that had an online business came to us to provision and maintain the virtual machines that ran their applications. It was more like a traditional way of managing stuff, with virtual machines and manual hand-made configurations.
Then changed to a new company that does cloud stuff. The same as before, but with a cloud provider involved. In there I changed a lot and started to focus more on the big picture of things and less on the specific details. I now think this was a mistake.
And here I am. The world is headed towards deployments and systems where we don't know the technology that runs down below and we manage it like we don't care.
I'm starting to think about what will I do when I leave this company, what kind of work would I like to do. I have a few options:
- I think I would like to work managing internal apps, nothing for external customers
- Maybe return to a company where they don't work with public clouds. Something more hands-on with operating systems.
- Programming? I like to code stuff but I don't know if it would work as a career choice.
I don't know. For now I think I'll learn nixos, to test the waters.
