More PC, less embedded devices
How it started
I wanted (for some reason, maybe as a victim of capitalism) a tablet to be able to use it on the couch. Don't know why I found the couch enjoyable as a space to work on but I did.
So I bought a tablet. Nothing very fancy but not the worst tablet ever, and got to work setting it all up.
Months later? well, it's a mix of a satisfaction and a dissappointment.
Why it didn't work
It did! In some way. I've found out about myself I don't like working on the couch and/or on touch screens. Last monday I was doing some research on dog foods, since probably I'm changing brands, and was missing constantly my mouse and keyboard.
I've found something I want to remember? I can't copy it anywhere without changing apps! (Yes, I know about split screens but once you split the screen the thing becomes unusable). It was kind of a journey to search for something that, on a computer, would be pretty easy to do (not counting the enshittification of the internet, of course).
But, I'ts very useful for something, and that's role playing. As a Game Master and player, I find extremely confortable to use the tablet (and it's stylus) to have my character sheets with me on the game. And as a GM, I don't need anything else to run my games. I have my notes, my music, my references, all in the tablet and it works great, since I don't have to multitask that much between apps.
What I'm doing now
So, i've learned to use my tablet as a specific-use device. Something I get out to do something specific, rather than my good-for-all computer I wanted it to be. With that, I returned to my trusty PC, a slimbook mini computer I keep on top of my table that doesn't take that much space and works great.
Let me share some of the stuff I'm doing to make my pc life more enjoyable (I'm already loving it but why not more):
- Learning to touch type fast! Computers are more enjoyable and feel better if you can comunicate with them quicker. Get your ideas out of your mind and onto the computer fast!
- Based on the last point, I'm changing my environment to respond more to key presses! I'm adding shortcuts to my desktop environment, and installed apps to control the X11 window manager with shortcuts. Again, faster is better.
- My chair has been cleaned up and improved I'ts wheels. I have an old ikea chair (the one with the long back) that works like the first day and I would like to have it until it dies (or I die).
- Sound! I've installed antennas again to my computer to use bluetooth. With my earphones I can have my phone and computers connected and switch seamlessly between them.
Conclusions
I'm growing more attached to my computer and less to my phone, that's the gist of it. I like the software of my computer, I know where i comes from. I don't like the software on my phone, it's dependency on google and how it's made.
We will probably talk again when the experience of Linux on phones is better. I'm going to probably jump on board.
